JAM Update
  • ratnobratnob February 3
Great to see lots of our favourite JAM Radio 1 jingles now presented in a cut-by-cut format:

    1FM: http://jingles.com/jam/radioids/demodl-1FM.php
    Closer to the Music: http://jingles.com/jam/radioids/demodl-CloserToTheMusic.php
    The Ultimate One: http://jingles.com/jam/radioids/demodl-Ultimate1.php

    They all sound brilliant.
  • m_hodgeym_hodgey February 3
Great stuff, although Duncan pipped you to the post with this news yesterday:

    Oh, sorry.
  • I think it's worth mentioning twice!
  • gameswizardgameswizard February 4
I wonder if Music Now will get the cut by cut treatment...? :)

"I think it's worth mentioning twice!"
"I wonder if Music Now will get the cut by cut treatment...? "
"I wonder if Music Now will get the cut by cut treatment...? "

    Very good Gents!
    They could even make a package that way...Oh, sorry! ... #"WYNY, WYNY...."#

That comment, Iain, sent me back to 'Double Plus'. I aways loved those jingles. I was in New York when they were playing, and the station sounded sensational. And there's no slicker, funnier demo: https://www.jingles.com/audio/d_DoublePlus.mp3
  • IainJohnstonIainJohnston February 4
Oddly enough Geoff, there was a WABC...FM (which became WPLJ in the later 1970s but never became
a "proper" relay/translator of Music Radio 77 when AM was going downhill - probably a HUGE mistake
retrospectively...) and of course there still is WCBS...FM, yet "RCA" as most USA collectors would know
it never tried to make their New York City FM call WNBC-FM to have their "company name" in their FM call.

103.5 seems to have been an unsuccessful frequency ever since "YNY" gave up MOR...?

I always like the WHYN/FM and WDRC versions. I'll have to put together a short sampler...

Kids basketball comes first, though I've already edited down a few WDRC cuts for inclusion.

Well, well - I had forgotten that, but here's my copy of the Radio 2 1982 package, including the cut you mention:

  • PPMPPM February 4
Thank you, just listening to them now. Such classy jingles.
  • IainJohnstonIainJohnston February 4
My Gawd! A jingle package of MORE THAN SEVEN CUTS!

Who would have thought of that? What a bizarre concept!

Indeed very classy. Thanks for posting Geoff.
  • As impressive as the jingles are, I'm equally impressed that Jon has updated the R1 logos on each of the demo pages and more importantly, hasn't used the incorrect/mocked 90-94 version that's all over the web. For example: http://logos.wikia.com/wiki/BBC_Radio_1
  • ratnobratnob February 5

Fascinating. Doesn't 'FM' take a long time to sing?
  • mjb1124mjb1124 February 9
Some more of the KOST packages have also been adapted to the cut-by-cut format. Namely The Coast Experience and Keep On Coastin'.

  • ratnobratnob February 12
Well spotted, and they sound wonderful. Funny how cut-by-cut has changed the way we listen to jingles. G

    Regarding Music Now -
    Cut #8:
"MIKE REID, EVERY MORNING, MIKE REID, WITH MUSIC, MIKE REID ON RADIO 1, MIKE REID, EVERY MORNING, MIKE REID, WITH MUSIC, MIKE REID ON RADIO 1"

    It's Mike Read, not Reid.

Mike Read is a DJ, broadcaster & presenter.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Read

Mike Reid was a stand-up comedian & an actor.

    Cut #8: NOEL EDMUNDS

    It's Noel Edmonds.

    Jeezy peeps!

Some of these items have (usually) only surfaced via hissy cassette, dull or mushy artifacted MP3,
dodgy CD dubs or copies that really were intended to be embargoed, so its great to hear them properly.

ESPECIALLY the "Originals" - many collectors might not be aware that many R1 custom cuts "made it"
into JAM series "custom" packages for other clients, especially USA stations.

Thanks for posting these Jon - are there some more treats to come?
  • MarkSMarkS February 13
Thanks for taking the time to post these R1 jingles Jon – much appreciated!
  • gameswizardgameswizard February 13

    Cut #8

I meant, of course(!), cut #30 (Music Now)

Regardless, I see the details have now been corrected on the Music Now page :)

  • OnyxPaulOnyxPaul February 13
    Thanks Jon
  • rakrak February 13
Thanks, Jon. I'm sure I'm not the only one of us who's been making up Live montages and segues by clicking the Play buttons, out of Cut order. Great stuff!
  • Tazman1966Tazman1966 February 13
Excellent Jon. Thanks for taking the time to upload these
  • mjb1124mjb1124 February 13
    Awesome stuff. Thanks Jon!
  • What can I say, I love them.
I clearly remember hearing what became Max Power #14 in 84 (I was 10) wearing stereo headphones. "Radio 1, 1, 1, 1" panning left and right. From that moment I fell in love with radio and more importantly with JAM jingles. I would rewind the cassette again and again, discovering something new each time-like the whistle that blows at the very end.
More than 30 years on I still get the same enjoyment from listening to them, which I do regularly. Thank goodness they'll live forever online and thank you to Jon for creating little pieces of perfection.
  • LenGroatLenGroat February 14
Good gosh! I was just about to go out and made the mistake of looking at JM - and it's 'manna from JAM heaven'..

Young Graham Collins and I have already scoured the later Radio 1 packages for additions to our next GEM package but might have to do a re-think + get more in the 'Jingle Piggy Bank' for an order VERY soon!

An amazing collection: the jingles that defined Uk radio.
  • m_hodgeym_hodgey February 14
Thanks Jon; you made my day with these.

Especially good to hear all the Radio 1 jingle orphans which didn’t make it to a JAM syndicated package.
  • IanFIanF February 15
Just to echo prevoius comments thanks Jon! Add to these other Radio 1 resings from other JAM packages and the wish list goes on.... :)
  • marcusmarcus February 17
Track 27 in Music Now... Mike Collier doing his best Sting impression and just about nailing it.. :)

One question about the '1 million watts' cut. I remember hearing the '2 million watts' version on air after a while. Was there a 3 million or 4 million version recorded?

I heard a 2 million watts for Tony Blackburn's Pick Of The Pops on BBC Radio 2.

  • GrahamCollinsGrahamCollins February 22
Radio 2 only had a 'two million watts' version recorded to my knowledge - which is a daft thing to claim anyway. It was done with tongue firmly in cheek.
  • jonnojonno February 22
BBC Radio 2 VHF transmitters total ERP ~ 2,400,000 Watts but I didn't count DAB transmitters, so two million is selling themselves a bit short.

Sheesh, that was plunging to new depths of anorakky nerdiness :D

There was definitely a 1 and a 2 million Watts cut for R1, there were no further iterations.

I am sure the Radio 2 version for Tony Blackburn was '1 billion watts'.

    Just in passing...

Mrs J likes listening to Simon Mayo on Radio 2 - and at the back of 5pm tonight said presenter was
playing some old airchecks of himself on Radio 1 - with a number of classic R1 JAM cuts VERY clearly heard.

I trust that the Beeb (once again (?)) will have a cheque in the post to JMW !

It was one and a half cuts, in a bad quality, very short clip of the intro to Simon's very first show on Radio 1, when he stood in for Gary Davies in 1986. The reason for the clip was an interview Simon was conducting on the way voices change over the years. It was on at approx 5.20 if any one is interested.

Can I just add my thanks to Jon for putting all the cuts up - they kept me going on a long nightshift the other day. I have a lot of R1 jingles but I have to say even I don't remember hearing #123. I am however the proud owner of a personal cut of #53. I always loved the Going Live cut and Jon was good enough to dig it out when I asked about it. He really is "one of a kind".

The audio quality was shockingly bad - as though it was recorded inside a toilet cistern as it was filling up.

Nicky I thought exactly the same about #123 and #119 I don't think they ever aired in that format. To me though they sound like #18 from 'the Ultimate One' and other top 40 cuts from that package, I wonder if they were resung/re worked?

did you get a resing of the Going Live cut?.....enjoyed the Schofe on R1 at that time, I was fully hooked on the jingles as a young teenager at that point too taping them and 'broadcasting' them in my room as a budding presenter. I just wish my station had jingles like these now.
  • NickySNickyS February 24
I'd heard #119 before but not #123 and I asked someone who would know and they didn't remember #123 so I do wonder if it ever aired or just sat on a JAM DAT tape. And yes I got the Going Live cut re-sung - just one of those R1 cuts that stuck in my head for years.
