Mike started out as the production director at KDKA Pittsburgh and finished up his radio career in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA. I received a few from Michael when he was PD at WGY in Albany-Troy-Schenectady, NY sometime in the late 70’s…but with a lot of my “stuff” they got lost in a few career moves. I haven’t heard these samplers in 20-25 years but I can still recall the order of each cut... Mike was the only guy I knew who had the complete Sande & Green "Color Radio" package for WTRY. Ken R had some tracks but not the entire package. S&G's "Color Radio" and TM's "Where Your Friends Are" are my two favorite packages.... Thanks Again, Iain Tom | ||

I also was able to find a few references still around for sung versions of the package. Not to promote another website, but most of the Neff samplers are posted at reelradio. I also have a complete set of them sitting on CD here. If I ever get the time to dig for them, I'll put 'em up on my servers. I’ve been doing that since around 2001 and have been a paid subscriber since 2006. For some unknown reason I never came across the Neff stuff. Perhaps I should look more carefully, at each exhibit, instead of just typing in “PAMS” or “TM” or “Ullman” in the search engine. Does The Media Preservation Foundation sell TM's WYFR reference CD’s? | ||

Who is the dominant male lead? And good to hear the 'Answer Machine' jingle again ~ for a few years it was on my machine (suitably edited of course) but some of my (older) non-radio friends hung up thinking it was a wrong number! REQUEST please: I love the 'Roaring 20s' cut at 4.50 and have of course heard it for Dr. Don Rose before on the 'Cruisin' albums, but not that version. Which company made this jingle, it is SUPERB. | Registered Member #2538 Joined: Sun May 23 2004, 05:00AMPosts: 1173 | I'm delighted to say that Michael Neff has read all of our comments and, although he no longer either collects or has any jingles, he's emailed the following message about how he became such a prolific and ground-breaking collector: I am very flattered people are enjoying the jingles samplers I produced (just for fun) DECADES ago. Indeed, I assembled them on consumer-grade reel-to-reel equipment in my spare time. Basically, just goofing around with the only intention to showcase the jingles I found interesting. I was born and raised in central and north central Pennsylvania. FAR, FAR AWAY from the 50,000 watt AM powerhouses of the day. And, FM? What was that?!!! Either a MONO simulcast of a co-owned AM station, or boring, easy-listening music for the dentist office. So, I was stuck listening to AWFUL Pepper-Tanner jingles on small-market stations. At times, I could pull in an AM station from the medium-sized cities of Altoona (PA), Elmira (NY), or Williamsport (PA). In these locations, the stations had better signals, programming, jocks ... and, most importantly ... JINGLES!!! In the summer, I would frequently accompany my Dad on his road trips to various newspapers around Pennsylvania. As he was in the newspaper business, he would visit papers that also owned a radio station in that town. We always made time for a quick visit to the studios so I could chat with whomever would listen to an inquisitive kid. And, I'd drop off a reel of tape with a pre-addressed, postage-paid envelope and asked ANYONE at the station if I could have a copy of their jingle master tapes. 10% of the time I'd get a reply. Most stations ignored my request. Anyway, that's how I started BUILDING my jingle collection. Luckily, as my radio career accelerated, I got to know the people at the stations I admired. Here, too, I'd send them a reel of tape ... and, sometimes, I'd get it back filled with the jingles I heard years earlier or coveted at the moment. Then, as I started PURCHASING jingles for the stations that employed me, on every trip to Dallas, I'd ask for dubs of three or four stations I respected. This, too, added to the collection from the reference material at JAM and TM. Somehow, I stumbled upon EXCELLENT "jingle samplers" produced by my friends Jon Wolfert and Ken R Deutsch. I decided to enter that arena, too, and started producing my own ... usually around Christmas to send to fellow jingle enthusiasts around the country. This was long before mass station ownership and consolidation. So, most stations were INDIVIDUAL and had a unique sound. Today, unfortunately, a station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, can sound exactly like their co-owned station in Binghamton, New York. Cost efficient ... but boring. Nothing special anymore. That's not the fault of the jingle companies. Their business, all along, was to syndicated their jingles to as many stations as possible. That's GOOD business. RADIO was the one to dilute itself. And, we no longer have a "farm system" (to quote a baseball analogy) to develop good talent, formats, and programs. Via automation (or satellite delivery) a small market station can sound almost as polished and professional as its big city neighbors. Here, too, that's GOOD and BAD. Eventually, I lost interest in radio station jingles. Even the classic material of the GOLDEN YEARS of PAMS and TM (and even Pepper-Tanner) sounds hopelessly out-of-place and dated on TODAY'S stations. The majority of the audience who can remember the heydays of LISTENING to AM radio stations have either died or moved on, themselves, to FM, satellite, and internet radio. So, please!!! Don't anyone tell me you can put PAMS Series 27 on a station (even oldies) and expect to be a winner. The audience has MATURED. Again, that's GOOD and BAD. I cherish EVERY MEMORY of listening to the stations and jingle packages I admired. It was a much more innocent time. Even competition between stations was more civilized. And when FM began its growth, it marked the end for AM radio. So many people are STUCK with the mentality of "if it only could be like it WAS!!!" Well, it ain't NEVER gonna be. Value what it WAS. And, I am VERY FORTUNATE to have made many pilgrimages to Dallas ... the radio station jingle capital of the WORLD. Getting the chance to meet the musicians, arrangers, and singers was a real thrill. To be there to see and hear MY little 6-second songs come to life was a special treat. As anyone who has ever maintained ANY audio on magnetic recording tape knows the stuff eventually becomes brittle, falls apart, and the audio loses fidelity. I've heard the stories of baking the reels in an oven, let them sit out in the sunshine, put them in your freezer overnight ... it's all mostly BS. My collection either became muddy or totally unusable. So, I was forced to toss much of it. And GOOD LUCK finding a reel-to-reel tape recorder these days. We're in the digital world now. Analog, like AM radio, has been left in the oxide dust of deteriorating magnetic recording tape. Analog radio, I fear, and commercial radio as we know it, will one day be totally obsolete. Through no fault of its own. Who WAITS for ANYTHING these days?!!! In recent years, if you wanted to hear YOUR favorite song, you had to WAIT for your favorite station to PLAY it. Now, you want to hear the tune? Download it (for free) to your computer or ipod and play it ANY TIME you want. Over-the-air radio will ALWAYS serve a purpose. I'm just not smart (and intuitive) enough to know what it will be. So, let's all recall with glee and delight our favorite stations and JINGLES!
