Collectors of, er, more mature years may recall Mike Neff's annual jingle samplers, sent out at Christmas. I recently stumbled across Mike and have posted an extract from his brilliant 1978 sampler here:

Thanks for posting this Bob and mentioning Mr "supersplice"...I remember getting bits n pieces of Michael Neff`s montages in the 1970s and loving what I heard - I also naively, wondered...who was this Michael Neff ? is he from the USA ? where did he does he get all the jingles from ? - quite mystifying for a "young" geordie jingle collector !

Good questions, Mr B. I've alerted Michael to the existence of our site in the hope of luring a seasoned collector out of retirement. Perhaps he'll be able to tell us more about how he began ...

Gosh Yes! I've still got a few kicking around somwhere.

What is "easy" for us today digitally he did with good old reel-to-reel (and probably not just splicing tape but twin-track stereo in mono mix-mode to get the "sequeing" of each cut).

If we're doing a "Neff Retrospective" as they would say in "art-exhibition-land" then we might as well do it properly!

Some excellent examples of his work...and plenty of JAM etc too!

I've been in touch with Mike over the years and I remember my brother receiving these little samplers in from him when he was at KDKA and WIND. Mike started out as the production director at KDKA Pittsburgh and finished up his radio career in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA.

It would be neat if he finds his way onto this site.

JAM fans will also remember that Michael was featured on the "Real Talk" demo extolling the virtues of that package as Operations Manager of WHP Talk Radio 580 in Harrisburg, PA.

Iain...

Wow!!! Thanks for posting the Neff samplers. I received a few from Michael when he was PD at WGY in Albany-Troy-Schenectady, NY sometime in the late 70’s…but with a lot of my “stuff” they got lost in a few career moves. I haven’t heard these samplers in 20-25 years but I can still recall the order of each cut...

Mike was the only guy I knew who had the complete Sande & Green "Color Radio" package for WTRY. Ken R had some tracks but not the entire package. S&G's "Color Radio" and TM's "Where Your Friends Are" are my two favorite packages....

Thanks Again, Iain

I'm also a big fan of WHERE YOUR FRIENDS ARE having learned it from its local use on WDRC Hartford, CT. One of the first things I looked for when were were boxing up the TM reels were the multi-tracks for the package, which I was able to locate. I also was able to find a few references still around for sung versions of the package.

Not to promote another website, but most of the Neff samplers are posted at reelradio. I also have a complete set of them sitting on CD here. If I ever get the time to dig for them, I'll put 'em up on my servers.

Great stuff!

Thanks TC….

I weekly log on to Ricky Irwin’s Reelradio site & look for jingle exhibits each time. I’ve been doing that since around 2001 and have been a paid subscriber since 2006. For some unknown reason I never came across the Neff stuff. Perhaps I should look more carefully, at each exhibit, instead of just typing in “PAMS” or “TM” or “Ullman” in the search engine.

Does The Media Preservation Foundation sell TM's WYFR reference CD’s?

While we're on the topic of "samplers", a certain TC has been modestly "hiding his light under a bushel" here, as he has created some huge samplers in the past!

This is one of his "Multiple Music Power" selections (30 mins long too) of classic cuts...

Ken R. Deutch also was famed for his samplers, which were of course to "showcase" the PAMS material available through the CPMG setup (not sure where I got this file, might have been TC?).

(This one is also to "test" the JM Mp3 upload-within-Post facility now that the recent problem has been attended to by Senior Admins)

Hey, this is great - what a terrific time-capsule of jingles of the time, with indications of the way JAM was emerging as the dominant player. Hadn't heard this, Iain, and love it - thanks.

Yup.... I created two 30-minute PAMS samplers back in 1998. I had spent years with a legal pad going through over 1,000 hours of PAMS references and making notes of unique cuts I'd use if I ever put together samplers.... and this is the first of the two samplers. It took many sleepless nights to assemble and the multi-track master of it no longer exists since the DA-88 decided to eat the tape. Ahhh well... It's mixed for posterity.

I'm sitting here listening to it for the first time in several years as I type this and had forgotten some of the cuts I'd included. Of course my daughter is ticked off that I'm paying more attention to this than THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB. (laughing)

Some of these cuts still bring chills down my spine. I don't know if that's good or bad!

Oh.... and from Mike Neff's resume [reverse chronologically] (thanks, Mike)...

Okay.... I guess I'm going to have to go digging through samplers in the middle of the night when I'm listening to the kids snore.... But in the mean time, there are some audio exhibits on our webpage at http://www.jingles.org/AudioExhibits.html

One of the items is the first of Pepper-Tanner samplers from Fred Vobbe produced in 1974.... http://wolfman.reelradio.com:8080/ramgen/jingles/frvjas.rm

Ahhhh.... the memories..........

Ah yes, Fred Vobbe. I remember getting some of his samplers as a teenager and being hugely envious of his personal cuts, surprised by his passion for Tanner, and amused by the risque nature of some of the tapes. As you say, memories ...

In case anyone wonders what it would be like to have a WHERE YOUR FRIENDS ARE cut currently resung, here are two examples. The first cut was sung last year... and the second in January 2009.

What a great/ nostalgic thread, makes me wish I'd been born in the States!

TC : I love the new Ron Sedaille sings, GREAT vocals. Who is the dominant male lead?

And good to hear the 'Answer Machine' jingle again ~ for a few years it was on my machine (suitably edited of course) but some of my (older) non-radio friends hung up thinking it was a wrong number!

REQUEST please: I love the 'Roaring 20s' cut at 4.50 and have of course heard it for Dr. Don Rose before on the 'Cruisin' albums, but not that version. Which company made this jingle, it is SUPERB.

Thanks

Len

Fred Vobbe...personal cuts...

On the odd occasion, I've privately dubbed people the not-very-complimentary "not-for-public-release" version of one of his personal cuts - I just hope that JAM, TM/iJingles, et al don't do that kind of thing when they do our Personal Cuts!

TC - I hope you won't mind me following-up by posting the second of those 30-minute "Multiple Music Power" samplers here now (again also now "topped-&-tailed" with a couple of your (published) KenR PAMS personal cuts.

The original tape may now be "chewed", but the digital versions live on in excellent quality thanks to that (ex-)purveyor of fine jingles, Ken R (and yes, even in the UK, people actually paid Ken to listen to YOUR montages!!!)

Mr Barras - this is a DIFFERENT one from the one I mentioned, which I found on Napster years ago! As much as this is a very distasteful diversion from the main topic (?!), can we asssume that Tanner & Co did a whole set of somewhat-cruel piss-takes out of this poor gentleman when he ordered the pre-cursors of Personal cuts?

PS - ratnob - Geoff, no I'm not going to sully the guy any further than already by posting "the other one" - but I'll email you the offending item instead!)

Nope.... I don't mind at all. The original montages were thirty minutes long so they could both fit on a C-60 cassette (remember those?).

Also... the PAMS series 27 "positive charge" cut you tagged on the end of the sampler Pt#2 was sung by ME at about 4am when I was in a Dallas studio in May 1988.

"...both fit on a C-60 cassette"

For those JM'ers under the age of 30, please understand that the PC-recordable CD had not yet been invented!

KenR's "distinctive" big samplers were also intended for C60 use, and here's both sides of his "Monster Sampler".
http://www.4shared.com/file/130469592/1dcf5302/KenR-MonsterSampler-Part1.html
http://www.4shared.com/file/130467716/3120be4e/KenR-MonsterSampler-Part2.html

Some very unusual items, especially as he had just recently legitimately acquired the "saved" PAMS Masters & Reference tapes, and was keen to let Collectors and others know that they were safe (and of course, usable for re-sings later - so there's a few *cough* non-vocal items!)

"...sung by ME at about 4am when I was in a Dallas studio in May 1988..."
And I'm sure a number of JM'ers will prefer your vocals to the "Seattle Screetch"...!
:^)

I'm delighted to say that Michael Neff has read all of our comments and, although he no longer either collects or has any jingles, he's emailed the following message about how he became such a prolific and ground-breaking collector:

I am very flattered people are enjoying the jingles samplers
I produced (just for fun) DECADES ago.
Indeed, I assembled them on consumer-grade reel-to-reel
equipment in my spare time. Basically, just goofing around
with the only intention to showcase the jingles I found interesting.

I was born and raised in central and north central Pennsylvania.
FAR, FAR AWAY from the 50,000 watt AM powerhouses of the day.
And, FM? What was that?!!! Either a MONO simulcast of a co-owned AM
station, or boring, easy-listening music for the dentist office.

So, I was stuck listening to AWFUL Pepper-Tanner jingles on
small-market stations. At times, I could pull in an AM station from the
medium-sized cities of Altoona (PA), Elmira (NY), or Williamsport (PA).
In these locations, the stations had better signals, programming,
jocks ... and, most importantly ... JINGLES!!!

In the summer, I would frequently accompany my Dad on his road trips
to various newspapers around Pennsylvania. As he was in the newspaper
business, he would visit papers that also owned a radio station in that town.
We always made time for a quick visit to the studios so I could chat with
whomever would listen to an inquisitive kid. And, I'd drop off a reel of tape
with a pre-addressed, postage-paid envelope and asked ANYONE at the
station if I could have a copy of their jingle master tapes. 10% of the time
I'd get a reply. Most stations ignored my request. Anyway, that's how I
started BUILDING my jingle collection.

Luckily, as my radio career accelerated, I got to know the people at the
stations I admired. Here, too, I'd send them a reel of tape ... and, sometimes,
I'd get it back filled with the jingles I heard years earlier or coveted at the moment.

Then, as I started PURCHASING jingles for the stations that employed me,
on every trip to Dallas, I'd ask for dubs of three or four stations I respected.
This, too, added to the collection from the reference material at JAM and TM.

Somehow, I stumbled upon EXCELLENT "jingle samplers" produced by my friends
Jon Wolfert and Ken R Deutsch. I decided to enter that arena, too, and started
producing my own ... usually around Christmas to send to fellow jingle enthusiasts
around the country. This was long before mass station ownership and consolidation.
So, most stations were INDIVIDUAL and had a unique sound. Today, unfortunately,
a station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, can sound exactly like their co-owned station
in Binghamton, New York. Cost efficient ... but boring. Nothing special anymore.
That's not the fault of the jingle companies. Their business, all along, was to
syndicated their jingles to as many stations as possible. That's GOOD business.
RADIO was the one to dilute itself. And, we no longer have a "farm system"
(to quote a baseball analogy) to develop good talent, formats, and programs.
Via automation (or satellite delivery) a small market station can sound almost as
polished and professional as its big city neighbors. Here, too, that's GOOD and BAD.

Eventually, I lost interest in radio station jingles. Even the classic material of the
GOLDEN YEARS of PAMS and TM (and even Pepper-Tanner) sounds hopelessly
out-of-place and dated on TODAY'S stations. The majority of the audience who
can remember the heydays of LISTENING to AM radio stations have either died
or moved on, themselves, to FM, satellite, and internet radio. So, please!!!
Don't anyone tell me you can put PAMS Series 27 on a station (even oldies)
and expect to be a winner. The audience has MATURED. Again, that's GOOD and BAD.

I cherish EVERY MEMORY of listening to the stations and jingle packages
I admired. It was a much more innocent time. Even competition between stations
was more civilized. And when FM began its growth, it marked the end for AM radio.
So many people are STUCK with the mentality of "if it only could be like it WAS!!!"
Well, it ain't NEVER gonna be. Value what it WAS.

And, I am VERY FORTUNATE to have made many pilgrimages to Dallas ...
the radio station jingle capital of the WORLD. Getting the chance to meet the
musicians, arrangers, and singers was a real thrill. To be there to see and hear MY
little 6-second songs come to life was a special treat.

As anyone who has ever maintained ANY audio on magnetic recording tape knows
the stuff eventually becomes brittle, falls apart, and the audio loses fidelity.
I've heard the stories of baking the reels in an oven, let them sit out in the sunshine,
put them in your freezer overnight ... it's all mostly BS. My collection either
became muddy or totally unusable. So, I was forced to toss much of it.
And GOOD LUCK finding a reel-to-reel tape recorder these days.
We're in the digital world now. Analog, like AM radio, has been left in the oxide dust
of deteriorating magnetic recording tape.

Analog radio, I fear, and commercial radio as we know it, will one day be totally obsolete.
Through no fault of its own. Who WAITS for ANYTHING these days?!!! In recent years,
if you wanted to hear YOUR favorite song, you had to WAIT for your favorite station
to PLAY it. Now, you want to hear the tune? Download it (for free) to your computer
or ipod and play it ANY TIME you want. Over-the-air radio will ALWAYS serve a purpose.
I'm just not smart (and intuitive) enough to know what it will be.

So, let's all recall with glee and delight our favorite stations and JINGLES!
They're still around ... even if we can only hear them as mp3 or wav files.
