With a bit of a nod to TServo's thread "cool jingles that never aired"...

"Jingle collectors like us often get a hold of things which may or may not have actually aired.
Some of them are very interesting, though."

How about we try to explore some of the most cringeingly BAD jingles that never aired because they simply, really, truly were so ... AWFUL! :^)

As a starter - 60's UK offshore pirate Radio London sensibly went to PAMS for the now-legendary Series 18 Sonovox re-sings, followed by Series 31, and the rest is history.

BUT - would "Big L" EVER have been so successful as a station if they had launched with these (UK-produced???) efforts instead of heading for Dallas???

wonderfulradiolondon-neverused.mp3

(PS - credits for the "preservation" of this audio go to the also-legendary Norman Barrington in Aberdeenshire)

Or how about awful jingles that DID go to air!

Quite a few spring to mind inluding the ORIGINAL resings of Dallas Power for Galaxy Radio in 1990 ("Ninety seven point twoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo").

Then there's this gem of a package for Wyvern FM. When AM & FM was split in 1994, 2 packages were commissioned at the last minute from MMI. The FM package used cuts from an earlier Cool FM package complete with parts of the original Cool FM front sing. Sadly the rushed "Wyvern FM" end sings were just goddam awful. The whole package from start to finish is one to cringe and weep at. How this ever made it to air is beyhond me, but like I said, the project was a rushed overnight job. What sounded like rough demo vocals were actually FINAL mixouts.

wyvn.mp3

Oh, and I'll save my comments on UK vocals over JAM tracks for another day.....

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!

Can we get to hear those Galaxy ones then Neal?! :^)

As for awful ones that indeed DID get on air - the more the merrier!
All "contributions" certainly welcomed (but probably not by their original producers I suspect!)

Truly awful indeed - my ears are still bleeding ! The 2nd KLEI cut sounds a bit like the original Star Trek TV theme.

Wixy Iain:

Ref : 'would "Big L" EVER have been so successful as a station if they had launched with these (UK-produced???)'

As a 15-17 year old in Twickenham I listened to 'Big L' for 8-10 hours a day when not at school (!)and 3 or 4 during the week, before I ran my 'bedroom radio station' from 8pm.... (another story) The PAMS jingles were a BIG part of the success of 'Big L', I did (of course) sing along with them... long before we had 'anoraks' !

I NEVER knew until TODAY they had made jingles in Britain and they would DEFINITELY not have worked 'back then'. Well done to Norman Barrington for preserving such RARE items.

One good reason why on the EAP CD set that I've banned myself from listening to those specific tracks. They're in the same catagory as the Fast Food Rockers stupid song from a few years ago and that's bad enough !

I rather like those KLEI jingles! No idea what kind of station they'd work on, but in their own right, I find them rather pleasing. But then I love the first Centre Radio package, so maybe I just have no taste...

That Wyvern one is bloody atrocious, mind.

The KLEI stuff is about 40-plus years old, and the Honolulu station did Hawaiian music programming (as any old codger with a very old copy of the WRTH "World Radio TV Handbook" at their fingertips would sadly know!)

Somewhere there is a Hawaii radio forum I found a while back which remenisces about the "good old days" before Clear Channel & other US equivalents of Bauer/Global/etc etc cloned all the Islands' stations as "celebrity jocks"/VT/satellite/networking etc from the "mainland".
Not much different from the UK then!

David's audio I think comes from the 1970s(?) vinyl LP set
(...whats an Ell Pee...? our younger members may ask.. :^) ) entitled "The World of Medium Wave Stations" (...whats "Medium Wave"...?)

(And what, pray tell, was all that wrong with the first Centre Radio package?!? (Sue Manning one...?) :^)

I actually like that one. I think David Arnold was doing a futuristic/Art of Noise style jingle.

I like it Iain an "Ell Pee" - is that also a Mexican town ?

Yes, you`re right, I lifted the KLEI jngles from the double-LP record "World Of Medium Wave Radio Stations" which was released in circa 1977. Don`t know whether you still have a copy Iain but I`ve still got one and remember the LP cover with radio station stickers on the outside and pics. of radio studios on the inside. I originally bought that record in the 1970s because I spotted a Metro Radio sticker on the cover, the record features a montage of the Emison "Sunshine" package, also recorded for Beacon Radio.

Its like the jingles that jingle sales people want hospital radio stations and presenters to buy.........

The good news is there are people who you trust who can write a good jingle .. and use the best singers .. many hospital stations have seen the light ...

Just think how much that package has cost the station ...maybe a good £3000 plus down the drain..

Neal mentioned earlier about UK vocals on JAM tracks. In my opinion half were ok and some were great and some were.....awful! Alfasound did resings for South Coast Radio. Only about 4 were in the ok catergory while ONE was great. The rest were....I'll let the example below speak for the rest.

Out of context and some 20+ years later it sounds a bit untuneful (is that a word?) but played out of a break and into a similar sounding 80's track at the time I'm sure it would have worked well. I think the vocals sound a bit Clare Grogan (Altered Images).

Personally I thought the SCR KOST re-sing with UK vocals did work OK - heard them on air a couple of times.

Now - wouldn't expect something from JAM in this Thread - but even the best can have off-days, as in this 1987 Radio One effort where the lead solo female version I doubt ever got on-air (she sounds not only very strained but seemed to think the Texan pronounciation of "tune" was OK for a British audience!)

awful-radioone-jam.mp3
The long mixout without the solo though is excellent!

Despite being on the 1986 package,it was never aired. However Jonno,on Herewards 10th birthday on 10/7/90,they did a jingle montage followed by the 102.7 version of that cut which hadn't aired until then.
