Chiltern Network montage http://jinglemad.com/index.php?p=/discussion/10017/chiltern-network-montage Sun, 08 Jun 2014 20:36:57 +0100 rak 10017@/index.php?p=/discussions https://soundcloud.com/radiooffair/chilternnetwork-jingles - what a great montage, and it's interesting hearing the various companies' jingles spread throughout the montage.

As good as other companies' jingles are, the TM cuts really shine through in this case, they really suited the sound of the stations at the time, very catchy and must have sounded fab blasting out of car radios, driving round Herts, Beds and Bucks (or is that Beds, Herts and Bucks these days?)

I don't know how much of the stations' output was networked, presumably to save money, but the jingles of the era were great.

Definitely worth a listen. Thanks, 'Radio Off Air'.]]>

PAMS 'Smart Set' cut re-sung for Brian Savin http://jinglemad.com/index.php?p=/discussion/10026/pams-smart-set-cut-re-sung-for-brian-savin Thu, 12 Jun 2014 13:28:37 +0100 LenGroat 10026@/index.php?p=/discussions
He chose this early 1960s PAMS 'Smart Set' cut, which was first heard in the UK on Britain Radio in 1964, and later on BBC Radio 2.

The vocal group at JAM in Dallas re-created the original harmonies.

If Jon should ever set a diabolically tough "History of JAM" one, I'll bet we'd all struggle to get into double-figures, no matter how much we think "we know"! :)

Well, let's see how this goes. Here is a very short and simple quiz, consisting of just one question (it must be a very small pub):

In 1978 JAM created a few unusual jingles for BBC Radio 2 to announce the frequency (wavelength) changes that took place that year. There were several versions, but here are two of them...

Radio 2 Has Made A Move

The question is: Where did these tracks come from? Were they custom cuts made for Radio 2, or were they existing tracks (and if so, who were they made for)?

There's no real prize here, other than being able to amaze me (which, admittedly, is worth nothing). Usually when I think there's some JAM trivia that no one could possibly know, I discover that someone does indeed have the answer. So I'm just curious to know if you can solve this one, because I have never seen it discussed here and I'm giving it a difficulty level of "8". Surprise me.

I'll wait about a week for the replies, and then tell you the correct answer. Current or former JAM staff not eligible.

Knowing there were few ads, I could play a LOT of Music and of course those fabulous JAM and PAMS JINGLES! I recorded it in the studio so it's reasonable quality, and with hindsight I should of course have told myself off for playing rather too many jingles ~ but HEY it was a fun 3 hours on a station I loved!

Looking back 21 years I'm GLAD I did it. I thought it would be fun to share it over a holiday weekend! We were a station that really USED our jingles....

Anyway...I thought I would share a couple of these recordings to anyone that's interested, because in my opinion it charts the evolution of local radio primarily in England & Wales (sorry Iain...I never ventured to Scotland with a tape deck, nor did I receive any Scottish station via atmospherics!) through my eyes and ears.

The first compilation is from 1985, when I was twelve years old...

Off-Air Radio Jingles Montage 1985 by Professor10361

The second recording in 1996/1997 is interesting because during the time of the compilation, there were loads of experimental Restricted Service Licence (RSL) stations on-air because of the pending second North West England regional licence (eventually won by Border Radio's "Century 105") and the original Radio Authority small alternate location licence(s) or "Sallies" in North/East Greater Manchester.

Now 35 years later..I think it's time to order another Custom from JAM.....
I don't want to go for a cut that everybody else has but I do want a cut from the hey day of Radio One or Two (7 voice)
I then thought Hey those great PAMS Cuts that Radio One had between 1972 and 1976..Nobodys had any of them customised.....
I've just listened to them all and they really are quite awful and thank God Jon came along just at the right time and rescued both Radio One and Two! =D>
So now its back to the drawing board and try to choose a "nice" cut from either the Radio One or Two Early JAM Packages!
